Employee Information and Training

All employees of VCU will be given a brochure explaining the requirements of the Hazard Communication Standard, as well as general safety information regarding chemical hazards. Units are requested to furnish employees with supplemental health hazard information regarding the specific chemical substances which they are required to work with. Employee training will be documented through the "Right-To-Know Worker Statement" which must be signed by the employee and the employee's supervisor. Documentation of training will be kept by the Office of Personnel Administration.

New employees of VCU will be required to view the safety orientation videotape (Safety Awareness) which explains worker "right-to-know". They will also be provided with a copy of the "VCU Safety Awareness Program - Employee Handbook". The tape and handbook will familiarize new employees with their responsibilities and rights under the law. It is then necessary for each unit to train new employees regarding specific chemical hazards they may come in contact with. This training must include information regarding specific components of hazard communication such as the location of MSDS.

Re-training for all employees is required when processes change which involve additional chemical hazards and as necessary to enhance employee awareness.

This training must cover (at a minimum) the following topics:

chemicals present throughout various work procedures

personal protective equipment to be worn to prevent or reduce exposures (i.e., gloves, goggles, lab coats, face shields, safety glasses, face masks, etc.)

work practices which could reduce or eliminate exposures (i.e., universal precautions, etc.)

safety and emergency procedures to follow if exposure occurs (i.e., spill cleanup kits, first aid, substance neutralizers, etc.)

the location and availability of this policy, the chemical inventory, and MSDSs.

Departmental training must be documented, and should include the employee's name, job title, social security number, date of training, and type of training offered. Retraining is required whenever a job process changes which involves different or additional hazards and as necessary to enhance employee awareness.
