RADIATION SAFETY LECTURE SCHEDULE
August - November 2008

Date and Locations:

The Radiation Safety Lecture/Slide Presentation is given monthly to provide personnel with a basic understanding of VCU/VCUHS Radiation Safety Rules and Regulations, and to comply with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Notice to Employees (10 CFR 19). Attendance at one session is required for all personnel who use or plan to use radionuclides and/or radiation producing devices at VCU. Previous orientation training at other institutions cannot substitute for training at VCU.

The lecture covers federal, state, and local regulations, radioisotope ordering, handling techniques, waste disposal, lab security, types of radiation hazards, dosimetry, lab surveys, decontamination procedures, and the basis for the ALARA philosophy (as low as reasonably achievable).

All radiation workers are required to read the Radiation Safety Guide before initiating work with radioactive materials or radiation. After reading the appropriate training manual and completing the orientation test as documentation, personnel may begin work with radiation or radioactive material, then attend the next scheduled lecture.

Personnel who have attended past sessions and would like to update their knowledge of VCU/VCUHS radiation safety regulations and policies are most welcome to attend at any time. If you have any questions, call Radiation Safety, at 828-9131.
