Call Client Services 804-828-PATH (828-7284); 1-800-363-9234

Anatomic Pathology incorporates the following laboratory services:

Autopsy
Our Service is staffed by faculty mentors who are certified in Anatomic Pathology, two Pathologists’ Assistants, a Pathology Lab Assistant, and one to two rotating Pathology Residents who perform 125 to 150 autopsies a year. There are expanding opportunities for clinical research in areas such as trauma, orthopedics, and other specialties.

Cytopathology
Cytopathology services offers expert cytologic interpretation and consultation of gynecological, non-gynecological and fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens with the ultimate goal of attaining the most accurate and complete diagnosis possible. We utilize the most advanced technologies available including light microscopy, immunocytochemistry, special stains and liquid base mono-layer pap smear preparation (SurePath).

Neuropathology
Our department has two Board certified neuropathologists. We maintain a close working relationship with Neurology, Neuro-oncology, and Neurosurgery in clinical service and research efforts. Brain, nerve, and muscle biopsies as well as brains from autopsies are received from VCUHS, the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, and referring physicians for diagnosis. Two hundred brain autopsies are performed each year. Research specialties include epilepsy and tumors.

Surgical Pathology Kidney H+E stains
Surgical pathology offers full histology services including immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and electron microscopy. Specialty services include:

Dermatopathology
Renal Pathology

The Anatomic Pathology Receiving area is located at the MCV campus in the Gateway Building, 1200 E. Marshall Street, 6th floor, (804) 828-9739.
